Who administers lyrics in a book?

I'm writing a guitar tutorial book and I'd like to include some commercial songs in the book (lyrics with chord symbols & strumming patterns).
I'll probably self-publish (ie cover printing costs and distribute it myself).

I have a few questions that maybe someone here can answer:

1. Who administers royalties for song lyrics in books?
2. How do I get permission to use lyrics and how much would it cost?
3. Would I still have to pay a royalty if I just used the song titles? (For example I'd include chords and strumming patterns and say "exercise 1 works with the following songs: Twist & Shout" etc...)

Thanks,
Graeme

Hi Graeme,

Call CAPASSO : 011 447 8870
They are now handling mechanical reproductions and they should be able to give you some answers as well as licence rates. You'd have to have specific songs to query and you might be referred to the relevant publishers.

Let us know what you find out, to help others in future....

Here's the answer I received from CAPASSO:

Option1. (Including lyrics and chords)
We (CAPASSO) can license your guitar book and have carried out several similar licence applications in the past.
However, all titles have to be pre-cleared with the publishers and in some cases we may have to ask you to supply us with your written chords and lyrics for the publishers’ approval. A few publishers may not permit this kind of reproduction for various reasons: perhaps one of their local composers might be releasing his own guitar book and will not be prepared for any competition [!]
But in the main, we don’t have too many problems as long as the price is right etc.
Our recommended copyright rate is normally 12.5% of the retail selling price of the book OR 15% of the wholesale price to dealer – whichever is the greater.

Option 2. (Including only song titles & chords)
As far as I’m concerned, because there is no copyright in titles, there would be no licence to pay. The “sample strumming patterns” would be your own creation, no doubt [?] and could not be associated or recognised as a copyrighted work, I presume.
